Judging the awards

All entries are evaluated by trained assessors from global growth partnership company Frost & Sullivan.

he judges are an independent panel of experts with extensive experience in growing businesses internationally. The judges will be supported by Frost & Sullivan who will complete initial assessment and evaluation of entries (including site visits). The judges undertake the final deliberations to agree on the winners.

Assessment will be weighted most heavily on results achieved, but will also consider key customers, markets, competitive advantage, and innovation.

  • Jack Stephens

    Jack Stephens

    Convenor of Judges

    The Convenor of Judges is Jack Stephens, Group General Manager International New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE).

    Jack has had extensive international business experience, including working as a trade commissioner in Australia, Fiji and Indonesia and as a Regional Manager for the Middle East. Jack has also held several senior management roles, including General Manager responsible for the operations of Trade New Zealand’s global network of 38 offices.

    He is currently responsible for the management of four of the five regions which comprise New Zealand Trade and Enterprise’s international network.

  • Murray Bain

    Murray Bain joined the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology as chief executive in April 2004. 

    He has a private sector background in banking, beginning his banking career in IT leading the move into real time banking systems and then being heavily involved in the establishment of New Zealand’s national EFTPOS system. In his banking career he has also led both treasury and finance functions as well as spending five years heading the retail and commercial banking arms of a national banking organisation.

    Murray subsequently held roles as acting chief executive and chief operating officer for the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC), and as a foundation executive in the establishment of Industry New Zealand. Before taking up his current role he was assistant governor in the Reserve Bank of New Zealand.

    Murray has also served as a director of a New Zealand Crown Research Institute and for a number of start-up companies.

    Murray has a Bachelor of Science in pure maths and a Master of Commerce (honours) in economics from the University of Canterbury.

  • Julie Christie

    Julie Christie

    Julie Christie is the founder and CEO of Eyeworks New Zealand and Australia, formerly known as Touchdown Productions. She formed the television production company in 1991 and sold it to Dutch media group, Eyeworks, in early 2006.

    Julie was the first Australasian entertainment producer to break into the lucrative US market and has achieved most of her international success with unscripted formats including The Chair, Miss Popularity and Treasure Island. The company’s formats, most of which were first aired in New Zealand, have been licensed to 30 countries including the US, the UK, France, Germany and Iraq.

    After a long career in unscripted television, Julie produced her first television drama, Burying Brian and executive-produced her first feature film, The Tattooist. Julie also owns Sky’s Living and Food channels and a resort in Fiji.

    The mother of two is the recipient of the 2004 Women in Film and Television Award for International Achievement, the 2006 SPADA Independent Producer of the Year, the 2008 Veuve Clicquot Businesswoman of The Year and was last year made an Officer of The New Zealand Order of Merit.
     
    Julie is also on the board of NZTE.

  • Jane Hunter

    Jane Hunter

    Jane Hunter has been owner, viticulturalist and Managing Director of Hunter's Wines since 1987, and has strong skills and experience in company management and international trade. Jane has been a director of HortResearch New Zealand, and the New Zealand Wine Guild, and a member of the Prime Minister's New Zealand 2000 Task Force.
     
    Jane is formerly a board member of the New Zealand Wine Company and NZTE.
     
    Jane was the inaugural winner of the International Women in Wine Award in 2004 at the Guildhall in London. In 1993 she was awarded an OBE for service to the wine industry and in 1997 she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Science from Massey University for her outstanding contribution to the industry. She was named a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to the viticulture industry in January 2009.

  • Chuan Seng Lee

    Chuan Seng Lee is a New Zealand citizen and a Singapore permanent resident, with a long and illustrious career in engineering in both countries.

    After graduating with a Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) from the University of Auckland, Chuan Seng worked on engineering projects in New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore and Indonesia. 

    In 1989 he was appointed director of Beca Carter Hollings and Ferner (Southeast Asia) Pte Ltd, with responsibility for various projects in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Myanmar. In that role he grew the Beca Group’s business into these countries as well as China.

    He is currently chairman of Beca Asia Holdings Pte Ltd and Beca Carter Hollings & Ferner (SE Asia) Pte Ltd and executive director of Beca Group Ltd, New Zealand. Chuan Seng is also a member, fellow or chair of a number of professional industry bodies and committees and the Chair of the NZTE’s Southeast Asia Beachhead Advisory Board. He is also the Founding President of the Singapore Green Building Council.

  • John Loughlin

    John Loughlin

    John Loughlin is a professional company director. He is currently Chair of ZESPRI Group Limited, Allied Farmers Limited, Allied Nationwide Finance Limited, Tru-Test Corporation Limited, and FirstLight Foods New Zealand Limited.

    John is a director of Metlifecare Limited, Taupo Motorsport Park Limited, Centralines Limited, Kermadec Property Fund Limited and Port of Napier Limited. He is a former member of New Zealand Markets Disciplinary Tribunal.
     
    John is a former CEO and before that CFO of Richmond Limited and prior to that was an institutional fund manager.  John and his wife also own Askerne Estate Winery in Hawkes Bay.

  • Phil O'Reilly

    Phil O’Reilly

    Phil O’Reilly is Chief Executive of Business New Zealand, New Zealand’s largest business advocacy group, representing thousands of businesses of all sizes.

    The Business New Zealand group includes four large regional business associations, the Major Companies Group, Export New Zealand, more than 70 affiliated industry associations and Buy New Zealand Made.The group’s goal is New Zealand’s prosperity through successful business.
    Phil works with government and other key decision makers on issues of concern to business and the economy.

    Internationally, Phil represents New Zealand employers at the International Labour Organization, contributes to the governing body of the ILO, and is a delegate to the Business and Industry Advisory Council of the OECD.

    Nationally, Phil chairs the Government’s Capitalising on Research and Development Action Group and is a board member of the New Zealand International Business Forum, the Foundation for Science, Research and Technology and the Royal Society, and serves on a number of other Ministerial and advisory groups.

  • Graham Turley

    Graham Turley leads ANZ’s Commercial business in New Zealand representing teams that focus on delivering relationship management to customers in the corporate, property construction finance and commercial sectors, including UDC Finance.

    Graham previously led the Corporate Finance team in New Zealand, responsible for providing corporate and acquisition financing, structured financial products, debt capital markets, leasing, project and leveraged finance, private equity and infrastructure investment to ANZ’s Corporate and Institutional customers in New Zealand. Prior to taking up the role of Managing Director, Commercial NZ, Graham also led ANZ’s global ANZ Capital business in an acting role.

    Graham has over 20 years experience in corporate finance and debt capital markets and has been involved in many of New Zealand’s complex corporate finance transactions.

    Graham graduated from Massey University with a Diploma of Horticulture (Dist) and a Bachelor of Business Studies, is a Charted Accountant and a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of New Zealand.
