Virtual Eye on the race transcript

Ian Taylor

00:00:00:04  Well our job at the Louis Vuitton Trophy is to actual deliver the live feed on the internet, so the tracking, so we do all the tracking, the graphics, animation for tv, internet and mobile.

We designed um this technology back in 1992 so we've done every America's Cup since then and basically what we do is we have special trackers that are fitted to the boats.  They tell us where the boats are, how fast they're going, list angle all that sort of stuff.  The data is then fed back to us onshore into our software, turns it into pictures which creates the 3D animations.

00:00:33  Now although we started in sailing and it's used in a lot of sailing events around the world now, um it's been advanced.  We use it in formula one, we use it in cricket, we use it in golf, um, a whole range of sports really.

00:00:44 Probably one of the most significant things that happened particularly for our business but but you know generally in this business was Sir Peter winning it and bringing it back home.  Um, we used to do, you know a lot of the events we did before then were overseas.  You had to travel and and basically you were just a a kind of provider.  But once Sir Peter got it back here in Auckland um, it just, those it those two two  defenses that we had here sort of, um solidified our role in this so that actually we ah are are kind seen as the experts in it and I think that you know that was really important.  It means that that we we work with a number of other New Zealand companies providing us with the trackers, ah providing us with some of the technology we use on the water.  So wherever we can bring New Zealand industry into what we do we we're able to do that while we're here for those six years in New Zealand.

00:01:33  I mean we never ever thought of it as going global.  I mean, I guess, coming from Dunedin you're always thinking you've got to go somewhere else to to um do win work to do work.  So you're either going to go to Auckland, or go to London or you're going to go to New York.  Um, you know I think we've always been a nation of traders.  Um, internally we don't, the opportunities for us are always off shore so it wasn't even something conscious we did, it just happened.

00:02:00  We've worked closely with NZTEA across a range of products, I mean, they were a big big help to us in India when we went up to do the Indian um Indian stuff.  Um they've they've sort of stepped in and ah invested in some of the things that we've done, not not normally directly but to make it easier for people to use us.

00:02:17  I think the future for us is going to be around um the sort of new media platforms, the internet mobile ah and were already doing a lot of work in there.  But the really exciting one for us now is the 3D stereo scopic.  Um I mean we've been involved in that for about two years.  We've done ah one event already in 3D stereo, we're working with formula one on that sort of stuff and we're going to shoot part of this on 3D stereo.  Ah we think, you know, the success of Avatar, which we knew was going to come, has has meant that there's going to be a major major drive.  It's like the shift to HD.  There's gonna gonna be another significant move to 3D stereo.
