With a strong focus on sectors, New Zealand Trade and Enterprise takes a strategic approach to improving the capability and international competitiveness of New Zealand businesses. We work in partnership with industry sectors, and this work influences the way we set priorities and develop services.
As they grow, individual businesses within a sector often face similar issues. Many of these issues are best approached collectively.
By working with industry sectors, we can more easily identify and overcome systemic barriers to business growth such as skills shortages or inadequate infrastructure. Thus a single project may develop the capability of a significant group of New Zealand businesses.
A range of tools are used to help address issues and develop sectors including sector projects, Beachheads and the World Class New Zealand programme. We also provide international market intelligence and market development services tailored for particular sectors.
Three sectors have been highlighted by the government for particular assistance because of their potential:

NZTE’s Sector Engagement Strategies provide a framework for its engagement with the biotechnology, information and communications technology, creative, food and beverage, specialised manufacturing, education, ICT, tourism, and wood processing sectors.
They are the starting point for NZTE’s engagement with these sectors for the next several years. NZTE would like to work in partnership with companies, groups of companies, regions and organisations to implement the strategies and refine them over time.
NZTE will only become involved where it can add value. See the Publications section for NZTE’s sector engagement strategies.
The World Class New Zealand programme is a practical programme that connects high-potential New Zealand sectors with the best talent in the world.
