Developing creative industries in New Zealand

Sector overview

The creative industries sector is identified within the Growth and Innovation Framework as one of the keys to New Zealand’s economic transformation. The sector was chosen both because of its potential for growth and its ability to enable innovation and improved productivity across other sectors within the economy. The creative industries sector currently contributes about $2.86 billion (3.1% total GDP), but the sector is growing at a faster rate than the economy as a whole, at a rate of 9%.

Creative industries is a diverse sector, which includes screen production, television, music, design, fashion, textiles and digital content. New Zealand has already established competitive advantage in some niches within the sector, notably, screen production and post production, and has a growing reputation across a number of other areas including fashion and design.

In addition to our world class capability, the creative industries can leverage New Zealand’s unique culture and as a knowledge based sector, it has the potential to generate wealth on a sustained basis and reposition New Zealand as a nation of new ideas and new thinking.

Key projects for 2006-07

Better By Design

www.betterbydesign.org.nz
The Better by Design programme aims to grow New Zealand’s export revenue by making world-class design a bigger differentiator for New Zealand products and services. The programme is designed to raise awareness of, and expertise in, design-led thinking among New Zealand companies and to help companies integrate design through all aspects of their business, beginning with leadership, strategy and research, through to functional and aesthetic design, branding, packaging and distribution.

A sustainable New Zealand entertainment sector

The key challenges for the entertainment sector are sustainable growth and increasing revenue and investment. This project will focus on two major opportunities for the screen production industry (the priority sector within the entertainment industry):

  • Promote, market and leverage New Zealand as a premium destination for a wide range of in bound screen production opportunities, thus building capability and investment for the New Zealand industry.
  • Improve the sustainability of the New Zealand industry through identifying capability gaps, encouraging collaboration, promoting capability offshore and improving market access and global connectedness, with a particular focus on the TVC, TV and post-production niches.

Wool products and technologies

New Zealand wool products, brand applications and technologies are world leading and there are a range of opportunities in niche markets. This project initially explored the automotive industry. This year the focus will be expanded to other markets, and a wider branding initiative will be developed.

Lifestyle market opportunities

This project aims to facilitate export growth in the burgeoning lifestyle markets of the world.  Working in the design and technology-driven sporting activity and outdoor products area, part of this project involves working with offshore retailers, brand building and developing a unique virtual marketing model. A separate initiative will see research and development on a wool carpet strategy.

Scoping projects

This year’s scoping projects include a strategy to increase investment in the screen production industry, potential for providing products and services to the experiential entertainment industry and work to inform development of a strategy for the digital content sector.
