The deregulation of the New Zealand economy in the late 1980s spawned a consultancy industry dedicated to helping the business and social sectors adapt to the new environment. The pragmatic approach taken in New Zealand to the corporatisation of state owned enterprises and privatisation gained world recognition, with many countries now turning to New Zealand for consultancy services.
New Zealand exports consultancy services in areas such as forestry, environmental sciences, infrastructure, agriculture, horticulture, finance, education, legal, public sector reform, social development and training. Annual consultancy services exports are estimated to be in excess of $500 million.
