21st Century Career Pathways in Technology (Smales Farm Technology)

The Project is being jointly undertaken by Smales Farm Technology Office Park in North Shore City, Auckland, and Massey University Albany Campus College of Sciences.

The vision of the Project is to provide Year 12 & 13 secondary school students with opportunities to interact with highly successful entrepreneurial business people in many technology sectors in the New Zealand economy so that these young people

  1. recognise and embrace future technology career opportunities available to them and
  2. are encouraged to pursue tertiary education in technology-related areas
  3. provide the future technology educated workforce for entrepreneurial businesses in the knowledge economy.

Business Hall of Fame (Enterprise NZ Trust)

The establishment of ‘Business Halls of Fame’ at each participating school will

  • Raise awareness of the role of business in New Zealand by regularly exposing students to successful ‘locally grown’ role models
  • Celebrate the business success of past members of the school community in a public fashion
  • Reinforce with students the high regard which business has in the school community
  • Involve a teacher professional development element as staff become aware, through regular contact with successful business people, of the necessity for enterprising people and ventures to the continued prosperity of New Zealand
  • Give an opportunity for young people to learn more about working for themselves and responding to opportunities to create financial capital
  • Facilitate strategic alliances between local business/industry groups, young people, parents, community groups, school principals and teachers.

Business @ School (Education Taranaki)

Business @ School seeks to positively influence the entrepreneurial and enterprising talent of Taranaki’s senior students by providing an inspirational yet structured programme which links the application of such skills/attributes to their future career and life ambitions.

  • Formulating an initial profile from participating youth
  • The development and delivery of a Business @ School teaching module which will be utilized in a class room setting  
  • The use of multimedia to show case young Taranaki role models who, through their enterprising skills and talents, are achieving success in career and life
  • Hosting a Business @ School Road show
  • Ongoing Support and advice.

Enterprise Champions Network (Canterbury Development Corporation)

The aim of the Enterprise Champions Network (ECN) is to develop an enterprise leadership culture within Canterbury schools, and by doing so embed sustainable environments that foster positive “can do” and enterprising attitudes. The main focus of the project will initially be on professional development for principals and teachers resulting in school enterprise projects.

The ECN will provide a cohesive network of opportunities in the areas of professional development and the promotion and celebration of Education for Enterprise (E4E) for educators.

Innovation, Enterprise & Education (Enterprise Wanganui Inc)

This project aims at initially identifying programmes currently operating successfully throughout New Zealand, analysing the ‘best practise’ components of these programmes and developing a specifically tailored pilot programme to meet the acknowledged goals.

Professional Development for Teachers/Pre and Post Service (Enterprise Northland)

This project will concentrate on creating professional development relations within UNITEC and College of Education (Christchurch) for pre-service and post-service enterprise capability development. This will be co-ordinated by Enterprise Northland but will have a National focus by enlisting a group of regional representatives within the teaching profession who have the ability to lead regions in Teacher enterprise development both pre and post service. The MOE will be a partner in this project with input from key professional development leaders within Christchurch College of Education and UNITEC.

Secondary Enterprise Resource Development (EDUCARE New Zealand Ltd)

This project will be operated in cojunction with MoE who are contributing $10,000 to the project. The project will create cross curricular enterprise resources for secondary teachers. This involves the eight curricular learning areas from level 5 to 8 and will involve creating a group of cross curricular secondary teachers, nationally, to write, trial and coordinate the resources which will be available on the MOE TKI website and on a DVD/CD. 

Stage two of the project will be a further resource which profiles how schools can create an enterprise culture through a project based, cross curricular approach, incorporating how schools strategically approach becoming an enterprise school.

The SIFE Entrepreneurial Enterprise Programme (SIFE NZ)

SIFE will establish the “SIFE Entrepreneurial Enterprise Program” that will provide student teams from tertiary institutions throughout New Zealand with the opportunity to apply for a $2,000 grant (per annum) that will be used to develop community-based projects specifically focussed on improving entrepreneurial activity through teaching enterprise skills to all participants.

The Small Business Game (The Small Business Company)

The Small Business Game is an exciting and informative online business game for high school students. The premise behind the game is to try and make learning the by-product of a fun activity tailored to appeal to the high school age group. The game will be part of a nationwide competition in which every school will be able to participate.

Techlink – Case Studies (IPENZ)

Techlink – Case studies is the development of a range of new case studies of technological practice from within leading NZ technology-based enterprise.  The case studies will identify specific aspects of technological knowledge and the nature of technology for classroom use and will be available on the Techlink website. 

This project will support current Ministry of Education teacher professional development initiatives in the areas of technology education and education for enterprise and extend the existing Techlink resource base which is available and promoted to all teachers of technology in New Zealand.

YEX (Yes Exports) (Enterprise NZ Trust)

The YEX project involves Young Enterprise Companies investigating setting up and actioning, if appropriate, export arrangements with a recognised international organisation, which facilitates international trade between similar aged students and similarly structured companies.

E2B (West Coast Development Trust)

The ‘E2B’ project aims to foster the growth of an enterprising disposition in participants.  The program will measure attitudinal changes toward business and business success, as well as demonstrate the development of skills and attitudes that underpin successful commercial risk-taking.

Northland Enterprising Teachers (Enterprise Northland)

This project will combine the Young Entrepreneur Programme (YEP), which is based on developing an entrepreneurial approach and an enterprising spirit with school students, with the Northland Enterprising Teachers project (NET). NET aims to provide school-based and practical professional development for the teachers who work with these students but who frequently lack the skills in their own experience. Further, the NET aims to assist schools to develop project partnerships with their community to enhance the relevancy of the curriculum and to therefore “Close the Enterprise Circle.”

• Both the YEP and the NET have proven to be highly successful, and have placed Northland at the leading edge of Education for Enterprise within New Zealand. These projects now include 20 of Northland’s 22 schools.

Outside the Square (Canterbury Development Corporation)

Outside The Square (OTS) was developed and launched by a partnership between the Canterbury Development Corporation (CDC) and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) Enterprise, Culture and Skills Activities (ECSA) Fund in 2004.  During this time OTS:

  • Developed and delivered 8 entrepreneurship workshops
  • Initiated the youth enterprise cluster
  • Facilitated the monthly Young Entrepreneurs Club
  • Facilitative entrepreneur shadowing experiences 
  • Developed the OTS Online Community
  • Hosted an enterprise training module - Entrepreneur Success Intelligence Seminar with Rock + Ice
  • Provided a component of professional development for teachers
  • Made youth enterprise (branded OTS) a permanent youth initiative at CDC
  • Initiated a network of sustainable private supporters.

Project Uenuku (Nga Uri O Te Ngahere Trust)

Stage One of this project was completed in August 2005, and at this point participants will have a thorough understanding of the key components of business planning and how this applies to their chosen enterprise.  The group has been trained and facilitated in the identification of their own business projects and its strategic planning requirements via planning sessions.  The next steps required to further develop their project as a group, to provide the support structures, scale of economy and sustainability required to promote success will be the subject of the roll over programme.
