Community Improvement through Youth

Awarded 20/05/2002
Developed for high school students and recent school leavers who are unemployed. By working in teams, participants identify and manage suitable community projects that enable them to develop enterprise skills, attitudes, and behaviours. The programme includes management, financial, research, and planning training. The teams are supported by business mentors. The pilot was trialled through three Hawkes Bay high schools.

Future Problem Solving

The Future Problem Solving programme teaches young people the skills of creative problem solving to help produce the young leaders of tomorrow. Four talented girls were selected to represent New Zealand at the International Future Problem Solving Finals in the USA. The Enterprise Culture and Skills Activities Fund contributed to the cost of the trip. The team came second in their section.

Growing the Future through Business Education Partnerships

Case studies of productive business-education partnerships are being developed under a programme designed to help young people become better equipped to learn, live, and participate in the business world of the future. Facilitators assist businesses to achieve innovative solutions by tapping into the talents of young people.

Onehunga Business High School, Auckland

The project is enabling Onehunga High School to establish a Business High School. Students in year 10 to 13 will be able to undertake courses on international and entrepreneurial business disciplines. In years 12 and 13 students will take Stage One business-related tertiary papers. The school hopes to position itself as the pre-eminent Business High School in New Zealand and attract students outside the Onehunga area.

Role-Playing for Success

A national programme that introduces entrepreneurial behaviour and business skills to secondary students through curriculum-linked role playing exercises. Students work together to solve business problems by utilising their individual skills to reach a common goal.

Techlink

Awarded 20/05/2002
This project is developing and trialling school resources packages focused on technology-based innovation in 24 schools located throughout New Zealand. Twelve separate resource packages will include topics such as structures and mechanisms, materials technology, food technology, biotechnology, information communication technology, production and process technology, and electronics. The resource packages will be available to schools throughout New Zealand.

Teengirls in Technology

A national programme designed to increase the awareness and acceptability of technology based careers among girls in secondary education. By raising the profile of technological careers it is hoped girls will realise ICT is an exciting and challenging industry. The programme includes interviews and workshops with businesswomen in the IT industry. This pilot programme is targeted at Year 11-13 girls from twenty schools in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch.

The Influence of Young Enterprise

This nation-wide project is helping determine whether entrepreneurs can be identified at an early age. A database of past participants in the Young Enterprise Scheme is being established. The project will develop a talent bank of young entrepreneurs.

Web Based Business Game

A web-based business game developed for high school students throughout New Zealand. Based around virtual venture capitals, the purpose of the game is to establish the best virtual portfolio of small businesses. The game is designed to be highly interactive, exiting, and informative - demonstrating business can be fun! Users learn how to write and critique business plans, produce simple investment strategies, and access articles about successful New Zealand entrepreneurs. School teams have the opportunity to compete against each other to win a cash prize for the business with the highest net worth.

Young Entrepreneur Programme in Northland

The Young Entrepreneur Programme helps guide Northland students between secondary school and self-employment. Students receive advanced business mentoring, business management training, and business financing opportunities.
