2005 New Zealand Trade and Enterprise Export Award winners

The 2005 New Zealand Trade and Enterprise Export Award winners were announced at a gala dinner in Christchurch on Thursday 11 August. 

Eight companies were awarded the accolade of the Exporter of the Year in their sector category. One of those winners – Rakon Ltd – was named the 2005 DHL Supreme Exporter of the Year. The awards were sponsored by DHL.

The winners were selected from 21 New Zealand Trade and Enterprise Export Award Finalists.

Rakon Ltd – Auckland

This Auckland company was described by the Export Awards’ judges as a class act, a problem solver for the world that counts global bluechip companies amongst its clients.

Agritech, Life Sciences & Biotechnology Exporter Of The Year
Fisher And Paykel Healthcare – Auckland

Click to open larger image in a new window Fisher & Paykel Healthcare is a technology leader that earns more than $200 million in export sales annually, its respiratory humidifiers and obstructive sleep apnea devices bringing relief to millions of people in 90 countries across the world. This big Auckland manufacturer achieved sales of $241 million in 2005, 98% in exports, winning praise from the Export Award’s judges for being a highly profitable and innovative enterprise and a clear brand leader in a niche market.

Creative And Design Exporter Of The Year
The Sweet Shop – Auckland

Click to open larger image in a new window The Sweet Shop is a profitable, high-end, boutique production house that exports top New Zealand directors and production crews to make commercials for international ad agencies. Business has rocketed since The Sweet Shop launched itself on the world in 2001. Staff numbers have increased from 3 to 22 and it’s achieving multi-million dollar export earnings annually with year on year compound growth of 40%. In January it was named one of the top 20 production houses in the world by leading international advertising industry publication Broads magazine.

Education Exporter Of The Year
The University Of Auckland – Auckland

Click to open larger image in a new window The University of Auckland, regarded as New Zealand’s leading research university, is also the country’s most successful education exporter, almost doubling income generated from international students over the past two years to $71.7 million in 2004. The University, which has a focus on internationalisation, is placed among the top 15 universities in the world for international enrolments. Its marketing strategy emphasises recruitment of high quality students to reinforce its brand equity as a world class university.

Comvita Ltd – Bay Of Plenty

A fast-growing, publicly listed company, Comvita increased annual export earnings by 47% in 2004 to $14.6 million. The judges said it had focused on developing a strong brand internationally, fighting hard to win business in a very competitive market.

Les Mills International – Auckland

Click to open larger image in a new window Les Mills International (LMI) is exporting its own brand of group fitness programmes to the world, with sales to almost 10,000 fitness clubs from Brazil to Scandinavia and 4 million people pumping, stepping and dancing to the beat of its music weekly. Seventeen agents covering 55 markets sell its programmes to fitness clubs, who pay a monthly fee for up to seven fitness programmes, all of which are re-launched every quarter with new music and new choreography.

Noske-Kaeser New Zealand Ltd – Manawatu

This export focused company is enjoying sustained and rapid growth, earning $15 million in international sales in 2004. Design capability is Noske-Kaeser NZ’s strength and the systems it offers clients extend to refrigeration and fire protection as well as air conditioners and ventilation systems.

Wood Processing, Building And Interiors Exporter Of The Year
Fletcher Construction South Pacific Division – Auckland

Click to open larger image in a new window Fletcher Construction South Pacific Division is the leading general contractor in the South Pacific, growing foreign exchange earnings by 42% to almost $60 million last year. The Export Awards’ judges congratulated the company on its solid project management, saying this strength had helped it achieve a dominant position in challenging markets. The company first exported its construction expertise to the South Pacific in 1946. It now has a permanent presence in seven countries and has undertaken hundreds of projects throughout the region.
