About Market Development Grants

About the programme

  • Enterprise Development Grants for Market Development co-funding can be used to help your business enter a new export market or undertake new activity in an existing export market.
  • Up to $500,000 ($100,000 per annum) is available, with NZTE contributing up to half the costs of your project while you contribute the rest.
  • We contribute to a range of marketing-related activities, such as market visits, in-market representation, and attending trade fairs. Activities  in the Australian market are not eligible.
  • Applications received from 10 March 2008 are being placed into a stand-by pool. For more information on the stand by pool see the Market Development FAQ page.

Who is eligible?


To be eligible:

  • You must be implementing an international market development project that represents a significant growth step for your business.
  • Your business must have turnover of no more than $50 million, and you must be committed to retaining the value of your business in New Zealand.
  • Your business must be resident in New Zealand and registered for GST. Groups of businesses working together can also apply.

What can the funding be used for?


You can use the funding to help implement international market development plans that are expected to have a substantial impact on your competitive position and revenue. This can involve entering new export markets, or undertaking new activity in existing export markets.

Examples of funded activities are:

  • Market visits
  • In-market representation
  • Advertising and promotion
  • Marketing collateral
  • Trade fairs and events
  • Market research

To comply with New Zealand’s international trade obligations, funding cannot be used for activities in Australia.

Capability Building and SmartStart

The EDG-CB has been aligned with the SmartStart grant offered by the Foundation for Research Science and Technology (FRST). SmartStart is designed to assist in the funding of Research and Technology activities, and like the EDG-CB, is targeted at small to medium-sized businesses.
