Better by Design aims to help New Zealand exporters differentiate themselves in global markets by producing superbly designed products and services.
Providing practical support and assistance is paramount and the Design Integration Programme is the key initiative from Better by Design to help companies improve their design capability. Other initiatives include design education internships for graduates, a comprehensive design directory to help companies select the appropriate design partner, information resources via the website, events and education courses.
Better by Design is overseen by an independent group of design-led business experts who sit on the Better by Design Advisory Board, and the programme is administered by New Zealand Trade & Enterprise.
Better by Design offers a range of programmes, targeted at New Zealand companies who are exporting and who have high growth aspirations. For more details and how to apply for these programmes visit the Better By Design website www.betterbydesign.org.nz.
Structured as a six-stage design journey, the programme provides practical support and assistance to help companies integrate design more effectively into their business.
The rewards from investing in design are already being seen by companies who have been through the programme. Benefits such as the faster uptake of new products in the market, increased export revenues, access into new markets and a re-invigoration of purpose and direction for many participating companies.
This service is free-of-charge to selected companies who meet the programme criteria. Information on how to apply can be found on the Better by Design website.
Design Integration Funding is available to companies which have completed the Design 360 assessment and planning process. It is specifically designed to help companies implement the recommendations in their Design 360 plan. Funding is provided up to a maximum of 50% to cover the costs of external business advisors, design consultants and mentors, and external costs associated with prototyping.
This programme aims to make it easier for companies to access the necessary skills and talent required to build their design capability. Funding is available to subsidise new designers working on commercially-focused projects, provided the employing company can demonstrate high-growth potential. Information on how to apply for a design education internship is available on the Better by Design website.
Developed in partnership with leading design and business experts, Better by Design offers a two-day foundation programme to show participants how to stand out in the global marketplace. Speakers include some of New Zealand’s leading design and business experts who have taken design-led thinking and used it to take their products to the world. Courses are scheduled when there is sufficient demand - Better by Design’s website will publicise details when available.
The Design Directory on Better by Design’s website contains comprehensive profiles of potential design partners for businesses. You can search for a design partner using categories that range from product and packaging design through to brand strategy and user experience design. If you’ve seen some great design work and want to know which company produced it for a particular client, you can also search using the client name.
The Better by Design website at www.betterbydesign.org.nz is a comprehensive resource containing news, case studies, an events calendar, reading resources, programme information, feature articles and anything of relevance to those wanting to know how to use design to create a competitive edge.
