Step-by-step guide to the application process


Step 1 - Check your eligibility

Before you start filling out your application you should check to make sure your business is eligible for funding.  You should also check to see if the projects you are looking to fund are eligible.

Step 2 - Register for an application form

  • Complete the online registration form.
  • Within 24 hours of registering, we will send you an email confirming your registration. If you don’t get this email, check that you entered correct email details on your registration form.
  • Write down the registration number you will be given. You will need to record this registration number to track your application.
  • Once you’ve registered, you will be able to download an application form.
  • Save the form to your computer

Step 3 - Fill in the application form

  • Write your registration number on the form.
  • Fill in the form, ensuring that you provide all the requested information. (See Tips on filling out the application form)
  • A Company Director must sign and date the form. (Note: A signature from a manager is not sufficient.)
  • Print out a hard copy of the application. Attach hard copies of the following information to your application form:
    • A set of the latest end-of-year financial reports
    • A set of year-to-date management accounts
    • A copy of your international market development plan or business plan
    • An original signed and dated copy of the confirmation/acknowledgement (This is the back page of the application form, which contains all the terms and conditions.)
    • An original bank deposit slip in the name of your company (so we can deposit the funding)
  • Double check that you have provided all required information using the checklist on the application form.

Step 4 - Submit your application

Send hard copies of the form and other requested information to:

When we receive your application, we will check to see if it is complete. If significant information is missing, or if you are not eligible, we will return your application. (See What if my application is unsuccessful?)

Step 4 - Notification

NZTE will process your application.  Once we've assessed your application and arrived at a decision, we'll notify you by mail about the outcome.

Step 5 - Finalising the funding

  • Read the contract. You have 20 working days to decide whether to accept or decline it.
  • If you want to accept, sign both copies of the contract and send them back to us. 
  • Once we have received the signed contacts we will sign them too, and send you your copy. This confirms that you have the funding.

Capability Building and SmartStart

The EDG-CB has been aligned with the SmartStart grant offered by the Foundation for Research Science and Technology (FRST). SmartStart is designed to assist in the funding of Research and Technology activities, and like the EDG-CB, is targeted at small to medium-sized businesses.
