In 2006 and 2007 New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) commissioned the Nielsen Company to conduct research into the perceptions overseas markets have of New Zealand business culture and values.
The research was conducted in Los Angeles and San Francisco in the United States, London in the United Kingdom, Shanghai in China, and Tokyo in Japan. Research was also carried out in Sydney and Melbourne, Australia.
These sites were chosen because it was felt that companies’ understanding of New Zealand would be more advanced than in other markets and the qualitative results would therefore provide richer information. Also these markets are our largest trading partners.
The findings present a picture of New Zealand business as ‘high in human values, but low in business acumen’. This does not mean that New Zealand should compromise its human values – they are part of the attraction of New Zealand – however it is essential that New Zealand businesses are able to demonstrate the basics of global business protocols if they are to be taken seriously.
