14 May 2015 : Ten companies will join New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) and New Zealand Petroleum & Minerals (NZP&M) at the APPEA Conference and Exhibition, which takes place from 17-20 May 2015 in Melbourne.
The Australian Petroleum Production & Exploration Association (APPEA) is the national body representing Australia’s oil and gas exploration and production industry, with the event bringing together the industry’s leading explorers, producers and suppliers.
New Zealand is a fast-emerging oil and gas producer with underexplored basins and significant petroleum potential.
The industry is becoming increasingly important for New Zealand, with oil and gas exploration and production growing strongly in recent years and now New Zealand’s fourth largest export earner, valued at around $2.2 billion.
According to NZTE’s Regional Director for Australia and Pacific, Clare Wilson, the oil and gas industry in New Zealand held many prospects and growing interest from overseas companies across a range of engineering and specialist technologies, creating investment opportunities and jobs.
“New Zealand has a long history in the oil and gas history dating back more than 150 years and APPEA is a great platform for New Zealand companies to showcase their high levels of expertise and innovation in this sector,” Ms Wilson said.
NZP&M General Manager James Stevenson-Wallace says APPEA is a key event for promoting oil and gas exploration in New Zealand.
“Australia is our largest export market for crude oil and we have a number of Australian companies operating in New Zealand. There is still significant potential for further investment by Australian industry.”
In March, Energy and Resources Minister Simon Bridges launched Block Offer 2015, the annual tender for oil and gas exploration permits, with the total acreage included in the tender amounting to 429,298 square kilometres. This includes 4,093 square kilometres onshore and 425,205 square kilometres offshore. The tender closes on 30 September.
Mr Bridges will be present at the New Zealand Pavilion on Monday 18 May to show support to the industry and the attending New Zealand companies.
On Monday night, the New Zealand High Commissioner to Australia H.E. Mr Chris Seed will host a function to discuss and discover the areas released for Block Offer 2015, and also to meet representatives from New Zealand’s leading explorers, producers and support companies. Mr Bridges will also be speaking at the function.
