Hugh made the transition from engineering to Wall Street early in his career and brings 30 years’ experience in business to the Beachhead team.
He has spent much of his career working in both emerging markets and global centres, but still calls New Zealand home.
Based in Yangon since 2018, Hugh can draw on his extensive experience to help New Zealand companies succeed in Myanmar. He can provide advice on a range of areas, from market entry and business development to government relationships and social business design.
Hugh is now a business consultant in Myanmar, where he works with the commercial and non-profit sectors.
Early in his career, he gained extensive expertise in corporate finance as a Director of Credit Suisse in the 1990s, leading mergers and acquisitions, project finance, privatisation and joint venture transactions in diverse geographies including Russia and Pakistan.
Hugh’s frontier market experience includes working in North Korea with SME business managers, regulators and officials to implement and manage an SME finance and enterprise development company.
His experience spans sectors including manufacturing and technology. He was chief commercial officer for a mobile tech start-up in India in 2014 and 2015.
As a director of The New Zealand Myanmar Chamber of Commerce, Hugh has an in-depth understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing New Zealand businesses expanding in Myanmar.
