Jean-Pierre Verbiest

Jean Pierre has lived and worked in South East Asia since the 1980’s, mostly in Thailand but also for several years in the Philippines and Viet Nam. After nearly a decade as an economist and econometrician with the United Nations, he joined the Asian Development Bank where he held several senior positions in economic research, finance and operations at ADB headquarters in Manila and in Viet Nam and Thailand.

In 2010, Jean-Pierre became an independent consultant based in Bangkok working mainly on economic and financial reforms in Myanmar and as an investment advisor in the country. Over the past two years, Jean-Pierre has been a lead consultant in compiling a comprehensive report by the ADB Economic Research Department on future socio-economic reforms in Myanmar. 

Since 2005, Jean-Pierre has also been a council member, and more recently a policy advisor, of the Mekong Institute, an intergovernmental not-for-profit Institution owned by five countries of the Mekong Region and founded through collaboration between the New Zealand and Thailand governments. Between 2005 and 2011, Jean-Pierre was member of the Executive Board of the Asian Institute of Technology, becoming vice-Chairman of the Board in 2007 and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the AIT. 

Jean Pierre has an economic and finance background and has written and contributed to many articles on economic development within Asia (particularly Thailand and Myanmar and the Mekong Area). His main areas of expertise are Asian economics, macroeconomics and financial analysis, forecasting and private-public partnerships. At the ADB, he has also participated in the development of many private investment projects in finance, power, education and health in Cambodia, Laos, Pakistan, Thailand and Viet Nam. Jean-Pierre has formed deep and extensive relationships across private, public and government sector in Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Viet Nam, and is able to leverage these connections. 

In Myanmar, Jean Pierre supported the Central Bank of Myanmar with the unification of the exchange rate in 2012 and in 2014 was also advisor to the selection committee for the entry of foreign banks in Myanmar. He supported the Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development on regional planning and development. In 2012, he joined West Indochina, a business advisory company as an Associate in banking and finance. With West Indochina, he organized visits of large delegations of business persons from different countries to look at business in this emerging market. 

He speaks fluent French, German, English, Dutch and conversational Thai.
