Regional Director, Latin America
Based in Sao Paulo, Steve is our Regional Director for the LATAM region (where NZTE has offices in Chile, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico). This role has recently been expanded to reflect the New Zealand Government’s increased commitment to the region.
Steve has held various international leadership roles for NZTE, most recently as Acting Trade Commissioner and Commercial Consul to Southern China, based in Guangzhou. From 2011 to 2014 he was Consul General to Dubai and the Northern Emirates, and Trade Commissioner to the Middle East, Africa and Pakistan, based in Dubai. In these roles he contributed to the New Zealand government’s political and economic strategies and led New Zealand’s commercial engagement with the host countries’ economic development agencies.
In New Zealand he has co-led the development of NZTE’s strategies for the international education sector and high-growth technology companies, including the design of new services and funding programmes. He was also NZTE’s Private Sector Liaison Officer to the World Bank Group.
His priorities in his new role will be to expand New Zealand’s commercial engagement in the LATAM region, particularly in the agritechnology, food processing, security technology, software and specialised manufacturing sectors.
Prior to joining NZTE, Steve’s experience included 15 years in production management and business development roles in the UK , mainly in the food, construction and publishing services sectors where he worked with clients such as Intel and BBC Educational Publishing. In New Zealand he previously worked in the not for profit sector as Marketing Manager for Te Manawa, the provincial Science Centre, Museum and Art Gallery in Manawatu.
