Trade Commissioner, Beijing, China
China is arguably New Zealand’s most important trading partner, and so it’s both an honour and a big responsibility to be New Zealand’s Trade Commissioner in Beijing. Together with my team, we help New Zealand companies develop and grow their China business. Right now, I don’t think there could be any more exciting place in the world to be doing this.
I studied Economics, Politics and Philosophy, and then after a couple of jobs, I started my career with NZTE in a relatively junior position in Wellington over 13 years ago. Since then I have had roles in New York, Singapore, Mumbai, Taipei and now Beijing. Along the way, I obtained an Executive MBA, learned to speak Chinese, and was groomed and coached into leadership positions by smart and supportive managers.
The nature of NZTE’s work means that you get the opportunity to develop, refine and pursue business strategies alongside some very impressive people. In an international context these people and their organisations might be investing in or buying from NZ, and they will often bring entirely different perspectives. In a New Zealand context, these people are our country’s smartest and most inspiring business leaders, and the opportunity to learn from them is one of the best and most stimulating parts of the job.
NZTE’s customers are New Zealand companies, and when they succeed, you know that NZ will prosper. That’s what makes the job fulfilling.
