Customer Manager, Wellington, New Zealand
In 1989 I was working for Korea Trade Promotion (KOTRA) in New Delhi in a role I loved. I was not looking to change jobs. One day I received a call asking me to meet with the then New Zealand Trade Commissioner in New Delhi, for lunch at the Sheraton Hotel. Unsure of what the meeting was about, but very keen to lunch at the hotel, I agreed.
On the day, there I was sitting amid discussion when I noticed a stir in the reception. In walked Sir Edmund Hillary, a legend and household name in India. I was completely in awe as he walked up to my table and introduced himself. “I am Ed.” I could only reply “I am Ravi.” It turned out that Sir Edmund Hillary was, in fact, the New Zealand High Commissioner and within minutes I committed to joining and promoting the interests of a country I had not heard of, and the start of an almost 30-year working relationship.
NZTE has delivered me loads of opportunities for learning, personal growth and development along the way – and a move to New Zealand. I am so proud every time we help an individual business succeed. Some customers have their personal assets at stake, so it is critical that our guidance protects them and helps them grow sustainably. It is also so rewarding to be a part of teams that are having a huge impact for New Zealand. Mine has been a most rewarding career with NZTE, and there’s more to come.
