The Matihiko Awards explore Māori excellence and contribution across a range of digital kaupapa (projects or initiatives). Unlike traditional awards that focus solely on cost or value, the Matihiko Awards emphasise contribution and impact.

NZTE was lucky enough to have two judges on this year’s panel, including Richard Cotman – Sector Lead Manufacturing Technology and Services and Karl Norton - Pakihi Māori (Māori Business) Customer Manager.

The awards are set to take place on Saturday 22 June in Tāmaki Makaurau, Auckland. These awards will spotlight and honour Māori for their outstanding contributions, impact and achievements in digital and technology.

Why should Māori tech companies get involved?

The Matihiko Awards are a space to recognise Māori leaders in digital and tech. By participating, companies gain visibility and recognition within the sector.

Karl Norton explains that the awards are a great opportunity to build your brand and foster connections as a Māori tech company.

“By participating in the Matihiko Awards, we help unlock the vast potential of the Māori tech sector. It’s a celebration that not only builds up the Māori tech community, but also springboards Māori tech companies to grow within a te ao Māori context.

These awards also inspire the next generation. When rangatahi (young people) see successful Māori leaders, they’re encouraged to pursue their own aspirations within tech.”

A story of innovation

Entering the Matihiko Awards isn’t just about winning - it’s about sharing an exciting story of innovation, market opportunity, and competitive advantage.

Whether you’re a young startup or an established player, the awards are all about nurturing and growing Māori companies in the tech sector.
