Case study

Creating an action plan to expand into high-yield, export-quality avocado production in the Dak Nong Province in the Central Highlands of Viet Nam.

The Challenge

While the region has advanced expertise in other horticulture areas, such as cultivating black pepper, it lacked the specialist resources to create a high-value avocado export industry.

Why New Zealand?

In addition to its extensive global experience in agriculture development, New Zealand was noted for its expertise in developing new varieties of dragonfruit in Viet Nam.

The outcome

In 2018, a three-year technical assistance programme was signed with SAM Agritech to provide expertise in fruit production technologies and establish a 200-hectare avocado orchard.

This partnership is an important milestone, enabling SAM Hi Technology Agriculture to scale up our investment and to earmark our resources for long-term investment in developing the avocado industry of Dak Nong.
