Report on the Sustainable is Attainable (SiA) initiative

The Sustainable is Attainable (SiA) initiative aims to address business waste in the Manawatū region, a notable centre for farming and food processing. NZTE is committed to sustainability and waste-to-value initiatives and funded this study to understand more about these initiatives.

This report outlines the findings from the first phase of the initiative, which commenced in late 2023.

The goals are to foster collaboration among businesses facing similar waste challenges, involve research institutions, and reduce food processing waste going to landfills.

Key findings reveal that the majority of waste is biological, largely paunch grass and biosolids.

Non-biological waste is dominated by glass, plastics and general waste. Processing barriers include the low value of high-volume biological waste and difficulties in recycling contaminated and mixed non-biological waste.
