Case study

Investigating the feasibility of using reject brine and aqua-brine instead of groundwater, to grow salt-tolerant food and fodder crops in Abu Dhabi (UAE)

The Challenge

To work alongside Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi to increase the amount of food the United Arab Emirates grows without further depleting falling supplies of groundwater or increasing its salinity.

Why New Zealand?

New Zealand's reputation for productive and sustainable farming practices and its "can-do"approach to solving problems makes it a natural partner for governments wanting to build their agricultural capacity.

The outcome

A four-year research project investigating the feasibility of using reject brine from small-scale desalination plants on farms and aqua-brine from fish farms, instead of groundwater, to grow salt-tolerant crops and fodders.
