    1

What's putting your business in a great position to grow internationally?

    1. Competitive advantage

      Competitive advantage

Do you have a clearly defined selling proposition for your product or service? Can you list the key competitive advantages (that can be verified) you have over your competition?

You need to be able to convince overseas buyers that your product or service is better than your competitors’.

Remember it’s not just about price – quality, reliability, after sales service, warranty, margins, market customisation and promotional support are all examples of how some products or services show they are different from their competitors, this is your USP (Unique Selling Proposition).

    2. Market validation

      Market validation

Do you have good information (including financial analysis) on potential customers, customer needs, size of market (volume and revenue) and costs of servicing that market from New Zealand?

It pays to make sure that there’s a market for the product or service you’re seeking to sell; this means carrying out significant amounts of research to make sure people want what you have to offer.

    3. Distribution & sales channels

      Distribution & sales channels

Are your sales and distribution channels clearly defined and established for each market?

The term ‘channels’ refers to how you make your sales and distribute your product or service to your customers, which may involve intermediaries / agents.

    4. Financial resources

      Financial resources

Is your company able to commit the money and the time it may take to develop your export market with no guarantee of a return on this investment?

Breaking into an offshore market requires considerable funds – for research, travel, brand development, advertising, trade fairs, sales promotion, training of overseas sales agents etc.

    5. People & experience

      People & experience

Does your company have the management capacity, experience and commitment required to develop export markets?

Exporting requires considerable commitment of time and experience from your management team. To be successful you will need to at least consider hiring managers familiar with the export market.

    6. Business & export plan

      Business & export plan

Do you have a well articulated export plan or strategy?

A plan or strategy is all about where you see your business in two, five or 10 years’ time. Among other things, it should include where you are now, how you got there, your story, your product and service offering, the markets you are present in, future markets, revenues and profitability.

  2. International growth - ambition & potential
