Areas of opportunity

Forestry and wood processing heartland

The Bay of Plenty has New Zealand’s largest area of plantation forest. The region’s wood and geothermal energy supply can be further leveraged and customised by processors to meet ongoing export needs for wood and wood fibre products.

Powering food production

The Bay of Plenty’s horticulture sector – centred on kiwifruit and avocado production – is experiencing strong growth, with opportunities for alternative land use such as manuka honey plantations and other niche crops also being investigated. The establishment of New Zealand’s largest marine mussel farm in the Eastern Bay of Plenty is creating significant opportunities, from hatcheries to farming and processing.

Leading-edge manufacturing and research

The region is building on its expertise in engineering and technology to support wood processing, agricultural, titanium and geothermal industries to develop an innovative high-value manufacturing capacity.
