Frequently asked questions

Got questions about the awards? See if these FAQs help, or drop us an email.
  • Is there a time frame to enter the awards?
This year we have significantly extended the application period to allow businesses to plan their applications in advance. Entries for the NZIBA may be submitted any time from Wednesday 21 March 2018 to 5.00pm (NZT) Wednesday 11 July 2018 via the online application portal.
  • Can I enter more than one category?

Yes, we encourage businesses to enter as many categories as appropriate.

You will need to select one General Category dependent on your business size, but can enter as many of the Specialist Categories as you like. Each Specialist Category has different criteria and requires a separate entry.

There is a great deal of work needed to put a good submission together so choose award categories wisely and identify which categories you stand out best.

  • What if my entry exceeds the specified word count?
Each question allows for a maximum of 500 words. Be sure to take note of how many words you have, be concise and stick to the word limit. If your submission runs over the specified word count, only the first 500 words of each question will be judged.
  • Can I submit video, online content and images as part of my application?
Absolutely. If you wish to include video or online content please include links to your content within the related question e.g. YouTube link or web page and provide any relevant passwords for downloads. For any supporting images/graphs, please upload the documents as high-resolution attachments.
  • More tips for applications
    • Your challenge is to write your submission to the judging panel with the goal of convincing them that it is the best in the category. Write it in a compelling way, and make sure that it is based on evidence. Remember, the judges have many entries to evaluate in some categories, so make yours memorable and easy to read.
    • Read the criteria carefully and make sure your submission addresses every question. The judges only have the information you provide in the submission so make sure you answer each part of the question thoroughly. If you only answer one part of a multi-part question, you will not be able to score full marks.
    • Follow the guidelines, including word limits; use the online template and spell check all your applications.
    • Avoid making vague or unsupported claims. Award-winning submissions always include data and evidence because doing so ensures credibility and believability.

  • What does a collaboration between the New Zealand International Export Awards and the Export New Zealand Regional Award Programmes mean?

For the first time, we’re working with Export New Zealand, which runs regional business awards around the country. We have aligned across the four categories below, which means regional category winners in each will automatically be shortlisted as a finalist in the NZIBA, catapulting your business into the limelight.

    The four aligned categories are:

    • Best Emerging Business
    • Best Medium Business
    • Best Large Business
    • Excellence in Innovation

If you don’t have a regional awards programme near your business, you can enter the New Zealand International Business Awards directly through our application portal. Remember all New Zealand Businesses are encouraged to enter both general and special categories. View a full list of categories.
