On 1 November 2017, New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) and the Angel Association were excited to deliver TechShed, a showcase to profile compelling tech businesses looking for investment, skills and connections to help accelerate their international growth. 12 companies, across 3 distinct stages of growth pitched to 150 guests from the New Zealand Investment ecosystem and VC representatives from Australia and the US.
Participating companies received a package of support from the NZTE Investment team that included strengthening the overall investment readiness of the business, helping develop and refine their ability to pitch for investment ensuring professional delivery, and facilitating introductions to relevant investors both in New Zealand and offshore.

A significant addition to this showcase was a new partnership with Tech Crunch, a world leading technology-media company, dedicated to profiling start-ups and breaking tech news. This partnership gave three TechShed participants the opportunity to exhibit in the first ever TechCrunch Battlefield Australasia. The three winning TechShed companies were The Social Club, The Green Fairy and The Clinician as determined by a panel of US early-stage investors visiting from Silicon Valley.

NZTE has delivered nine showcases in four years, with 90 companies showcased and over $150 million invested in Kiwi startups. Blinder is a communications platform for the PR managers of high-profile clients. Blinder has been used by teams managing VIPs from Olympic champions to Grammy winners. Blinder is solving a communications problem that happens when people don’t want to lose their privacy by having their phone numbers known, but still want to make themselves available on their mobile phone. Blinder’s first product is a cloud-based phone interview application.
Code Avengers is an online education company founded in 2012 by Dr Michael Walmsley (PhD computer-assisted learning). The company has 20 staff and its services are available in six languages. A comprehensive online education platform that effectively caters to educational institutes and individual learners. It provides interactive gamified courses that teach computer coding, digital skills and design, through a learn-by-doing approach that aims to be as fun and as addictive as computer games.
Triplics Ltd (ecoPortal) is a SaaS platform for enterprise risk management, primarily health and safety. The business is at early expansion stage with $1 million NZD ARR, and is on track to double FY17 revenue in FY18. The business has been bootstrapped to date, and is led by the Co-Founders, supported by experienced executives. ecoPortal provides an end-to-end solution for enterprise risk management. It transforms paper, spreadsheets, and document based risk management processes onto its cloud based risk management platform.
Fluent is a language technology company. A designer of intelligent software solutions, Fluent addresses practical problems with the English language using the application of crowdsourced human intelligence, combined with in-house scientific research and data analysis. The FluentIQ test is an affordable and comprehensive online software product that assesses the ability of a person to communicate effectively in English. Speaking, listening, reading and writing are assessed for comprehensibility.
Hectre provides growers with one place to capture and visualise data for increased yield, precision, and traceability. Providing real time knowledge to growers enables them to create the perfect fruit. In 2015, Hectre spoke to 120 orchardists across New Zealand and Australia who all wanted the same thing: to digitally capture the most important data for increasing fruit yields.
MicroManager is a smartphone app that automatically captures travel time, phone calls and time on site, allowing users to easily monitor time spent on tasks that are usually the hardest to keep track of. Patient Reported Outcomes Measures (PROMs) are short surveys that measure the quality and effectiveness of care from the patient’s perspective – before, during and after treatment. The use of PROMS is now mandatory in the UK, with other markets expected to follow. ZEDOC is a cloud-based PROMs platform for patient outreach, collection and analysis. It seamlessly gathers data from wearables and uses chatbots and apps to engage patients and drive response rates.
The Green Fairy
The Green Fairy is empowering families to turn their living rooms into an entertaining and educational fantasy world by using augmented reality (AR) to create a 21st century theatre experience for children. The Green Fairy is a hybrid production – part-cartoon, part-video game, which is accessed as an app via AR enabled devices ranging from iPads and smartphones to wearable AR headsets (expected to replace the smartphone in the 2020s).
The Social Club
The Social Club is an influencer marketing platform, connecting social media influencers with brands and agencies to run easy and authentic social media campaigns. The Social Club is a full-service automated platform, which manages all aspects of influencer marketing campaigns including: identification, pricing, briefing, approving influencer content and reporting.
The explosion of social and digital media has seen annual ad spend exceed $31 billion NZD – and it is doubling every two years. By 2020, the Economist expects social media to be the number one channel for experiencing brands. Despite this growth, brand owners currently have no way to understand how brands are built across social and digital channels. Zavy provides direction to optimise future investment.
