Investing in Bay of Plenty / Te Moana-a-Toi

The big picture

The Bay of Plenty is a title holding much promise, but it's one to which this region can certainly lay claim. Its diverse landscape supports many thriving industries, from forestry, horticulture and food production to leading-edge manufacturing and materials research.

The Bay of Plenty's primary and land-based industries offer attractive potential for investors to leverage their strengths. Dairy production is a key sector, with large areas of land available for high-yield production. The Bay of Plenty's resource-rich coastline also hosts a developing aquaculture industry, opening up several potential investment opportunities.

Part of a high-growth "golden triangle" also including Auckland and Hamilton, the city of Tauranga has ready access to major New Zealand and global markets, with excellent road and rail infrastructure and the country's largest international port.

Sector advantages

Food production

Food production is a prime area of investment for the Bay of Plenty. Centred on kiwifruit and avocado production – the Bay of Plenty is New Zealand's largest producer of these fruits – the horticulture sector is experiencing strong growth. But there's plenty of other food-based industries for investors to get excited about. The potential for alternative land use for mānuka honey plantations and other niche crops is being actively explored. New Zealand's largest marine mussel farm in the Eastern Bay of Plenty is also creating significant opportunities, from hatcheries to farming and processing.

Regional success stories

Comvita

Headquartered at Paengaroa in the Bay of Plenty, Comvita Limited specialises in natural health products and is the world's largest manufacturer and marketer of mānuka honey. The company sells to more than 18 countries, with offices in Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Zespri

Based in Mt Maunganui, Zespri International Limited is the world's largest marketer of kiwifruit, selling into more than 50 countries and managing 30 percent of the global volume. Zespri aims to create a worldwide, year-round supply of kiwifruit with offices in over 20 countries.

Local support for investors

Bay of Connections, coordinated by the Bay of Plenty Regional Council, is the regional growth strategy for the wider Bay of Plenty. It links the region’s four Economic Development Agencies (EDAs) – Priority One, Grow Rotorua, Enterprise Great Lake Taupō, and Toi-EDA – in a common effort to support regional growth.

Bay of Connections supports investors in partnership with NZTE. The first point of contact for potential investors is the Bay of Connections Portfolio Manager, who can connect them with the relevant EDA for one-on-one support and a smooth transition into the Bay of Plenty.
