Investing in Canterbury / Waitaha

The big picture

With its rolling plains and abundant farmland, it’s little wonder that Canterbury is New Zealand’s largest agricultural region. This sector supports a successful food production industry and a thriving agritech scene, offering exciting and innovative prospects for investors.

Canterbury’s business advantage goes well beyond agriculture. Ōtautahi Christchurch, New Zealand’s second-largest city, is a hub of professional services and logistics and a gateway to the South Island and Antarctica. Christchurch has reasserted itself over the last decade as a vibrant city of urban regeneration, creativity and innovation, and hosts a wealth of high-value, high-growth sectors including tourism, technology and engineering.

The quality of life on offer to Christchurch and Canterbury residents, and a drive towards sustainability and a lower-carbon economy, makes this an exciting time to invest in the region.

Sector advantages

Agritech and future foods

Canterbury generates a fifth of New Zealand’s agricultural GDP across a diverse array of products including meat and dairy, arable farming, horticulture, wine and seafood. Its productivity growth in agriculture has outpaced the national average over the last decade, and the region is well-placed for further growth. Canterbury’s production strengths also make it a key region for agritech and future food innovation – Lincoln University hosts the largest concentration of land-based researchers in the Southern Hemisphere, and innovative Canterbury businesses offer significant potential for investors focussed on high-value food and fibre products, agritech and productivity growth.

The geographical spread is strategic and allows ANZCO to better manage livestock flow and distribute their products around the world.
