Investing in Gisborne / Tairāwhiti

The big picture

The first place in the world to see the sun rise each day, the Tairāwhiti-Gisborne region shines for horticulture and food and beverage production, and also offers significant potential for further growth in wood processing and tourism.

Tairāwhiti-Gisborne features high sunshine hours and thousands of acres of fertile land surrounded by hills and the Pacific Ocean, creating a unique micro-climate with some of the best farming and growing conditions in the world. These conditions also give the region a forestry production advantage, with rapid tree maturation and matching opportunities in wood processing.

Sunny conditions and beautiful beaches, combined with significant Māori cultural features, a renowned festival calendar and world-class vineyards, also give Tairāwhiti-Gisborne strong tourism appeal.

Sector advantages

Horticulture and food and beverage

With a famously good climate and fertile soils, Tairāwhiti-Gisborne is a food production powerhouse. Horticulture is the largest and fastest-growing industry in the region, and plantings of high value produce are increasing – citrus, grapes for winemaking, pipfruit, kiwifruit, avocados and macadamia nuts. Other primary production strengths include arable farming and sheep and beef production.

Regional success stories

Founded in 1975, LeaderBrand is one of New Zealand's most recognised and diverse horticultural businesses. It is a leading grower, packer and shipper of broccoli, lettuce and fresh sweetcorn for the New Zealand market, and the natural advantages of Tāirawhiti-Gisborne allow LeaderBrand to crop year-round. LeaderBrand grows on approximately 3,500 hectares of land in the Tairāwhiti-Gisborne and Canterbury regions, and supplies processing, domestic and international customers.
