Investing in Marlborough / Te Tauihu o te waka a Maui

The big picture

Marlborough is New Zealand's premier wine region, producing more than three-quarters of national output and globally renowned for its sauvignon blanc. That translates into attractive investment opportunities in viticulture – but there's much more to Marlborough than wine.

Marlborough boasts innovative manufacturing and engineering industries, with a particular emphasis on aviation and viticulture technology. It also hosts extensive aquaculture production and associated research, along with other high-quality primary production across its diverse landscapes.

Marlborough is a prime tourist destination, with its luxury food and wine offerings and the iconic Marlborough Sounds attracting visitors from around the world. There's scope for growth and solid returns in the tourism sector, including leveraging the region's strengths in the cruise ship and conference travel markets.

Sector advantages

Food and beverage

Marlborough is synonymous with sauvignon blanc and other world-class wines, and its diverse landscapes also support other niche, high-quality food industries including honey. The region is a key location for marine farming and produces more than 60% of New Zealand's total production of both Greenshell(TM) mussels and Pacific salmon, with intensive research underway into the commercial development of other marine species.

Regional success stories

New Zealand King Salmon

Marlborough is home to the farms of New Zealand King Salmon (NZKS), the world's largest aquaculture producer of king salmon. The company controls all elements of the value chain from breeding and growing to harvesting and processing, and has been growing and selling salmon to consumers and chefs around the world for more than 30 years. It owns and operates eight seafarms in the Marlborough Sounds.

Cloudy Bay Wines

Established in 1985, Cloudy Bay is one of the original winegrowers in Marlborough. The winery is named after Cloudy Bay, a body of water discovered by Captain James Cook during his voyage to New Zealand in 1770. In 2003, the estate was acquired by LVMH through its champagne house Veuve Clicquot. Today, Cloudy Bay is one of Marlborough's signature wine brands, representing the region's quality throughout the world.

Local support for investors

The Marlborough District Council’s Economic Development Unit (EDU) facilitates investment in the region, working closely with the local business community, investors, and local and central government agencies including New Zealand Trade and Enterprise.

In its work to support and assist investors, the EDU investigates opportunities, acts as an information resource, fosters innovation and development, and encourages industry collaboration.
