The Official Information Act 1982 (OIA) enables citizens, permanent residents, visitors to New Zealand and body corporates registered or with a place of business in New Zealand to make a request for official information held by government agencies, including New Zealand Trade and Enterprise.
Before requesting official information under the Act from us, we encourage you to check out our news, media releases, reports and publications, as you may find the information you need is already publicly available.
If you know that the information was previously published and publicly available, but you cannot find it on our website, you can request a copy under Part 3 of the Public Records Act (Public access to information and records).
How to make an OIA request
Please email ministerials@nzte.govt.nz. Requests should include:
your name
postal address or preferred email address
specific details of the information you want.
If you make your request by phone or in person, we will confirm it in writing.
How long will it take?
The response will be sent back within 20 working days. Sometimes, for large requests or those requiring consultation, the Act allows for a time-limit extension. If so, we will let you know and give you a specific due date.
Withholding information
We may withhold information for specific reasons. If this occurs, we will explain the reasons why.
For more information, please refer to sections 6 (Official Information Act 1982 No 156 (as at 01 May 2023), Public Act 6 Conclusive reasons for withholding official information – New Zealand Legislation), 9 (Official Information Act 1982 No 156 (as at 01 May 2023), Public Act 9 Other reasons for withholding official information – New Zealand Legislation) and 18 (Official Information Act 1982 No 156 (as at 01 May 2023), Public Act 18 Refusal of requests – New Zealand Legislation) of the Official Information Act.
