Background

The name Te Kawenga was gifted to New Zealand Central at the dawn ceremony re-opening on June 15, 2018. The name was bestowed by NZTE’s Māori Cultural Advisors (Trevor Moeke, Che Wilson, Derek Lardelli and Tina Wilson) and was humbly received by Peter Chrisp (CE) and Glenn Murphy (the then RD of Greater China) on behalf of New Zealand Central and Aotearoa New Zealand.

Embracing our NZ Māori heritage, Te Kawenga combines three meanings. Primarily, it is named after kawekawe, the Māori word for the tentacles of an octopus. NZ Central serves as an outreach post for home (Aotearoa New Zealand), and Te Kawenga acknowledges the connections and relationships between China and Aotearoa New Zealand. Additionally, Te Kawenga refers to the long-tailed cuckoo, Kawekawe (also known as the Koekoeā), which migrates from Asia to Aotearoa New Zealand every year. The root word, kawe, also means to carry, symbolising the carrying of NZ Inc's aspirations around the world.

How did this come about?

In preparation for the whakapuru mauri (reinstating the life essence) of NZC, Derek Lardelli asked us, "What is the name of the whare (house)?"

As there was no Maori name, our Rangatira (Māori leaders) consulted and then gifted Te Kawenga. The Maori leaders consisted of NZTE cultural advisors for NZC's opening – Trevor Moeke, Che Wilson, Derek Lardelli and NZTE’s Tina Wilson.

Q: Ko wai te ingoa o te whare nei? What is the name of this house?

A: Ko Te Kawenga New Zealand Central. The name is Te Kawenga New Zealand Central

Q: Mō wai te whare nei? Who is this house for?

A: Mō Aotearoa me te ao katoa. For Aotearoa New Zealand, and for all worldwide.
