Record visitation

New Zealand welcomed a record 3.8 million visitors in 2018, a 57 percent increase since 2009. Visitor numbers are forecast to reach 5.1 million a year by 2025. Tourism spending is also increasing, with a Government and industry focus on developing high-value attractions and year-round visitation.

Room for growth

Tourism attractions in New Zealand are experiencing record operating performance, and there is strong demand for high-value attractions that provide authentic visitor experiences. Hotel demand is growing to match, with the strongest average daily rate (ADR) growth of any major Asia-Pacific market, and an ongoing need for additional hotel rooms to meet future demand.

Quality infrastructure

New Zealand is well-connected to international tourism markets by direct air routes. When visitors arrive, excellent transport infrastructure provides clear tourism routes and a captive market for investment. The New Zealand government is committed to supporting tourism and promoting regional diversity and capacity, with additional high-quality infrastructure in the pipeline.

Open for business

New Zealand offers economic stability and a high quality of life and consistently ranks as one of the least corrupt countries in the world. It's a safe and stable place in which to invest and do business. An increasingly proactive approach to sustainability is opening up new opportunities for socially and environmentally-aware tourism investors.

Record tourism numbers are driving strong hotel performance in New Zealand's top visitor destinations. Annual room occupancy rates are an impressive 80%, and the sector boasts the strongest average daily rate (ADR) of any major Asia-Pacific hotel markets.

72 percent of New Zealand's room supply pipeline is still in planning stages, and with strong visitor numbers forecast to continue, thousands of additional hotel rooms will be needed to meet future demand across the country.

Key New Zealand destinations seeking additional hotel investment include Rotorua, Taupō, Wellington, Christchurch, Queenstown and Dunedin. Many of these regions are trending towards year-round visitation, offering further benefits for hotel performance.
